SCORPIUS RESUMES WITH IMPRESSIVE YARRA VALLEY WIN. (17th December 2021)
Five year old Deep Field gelding Scorpius returned to racing with an impressive win at Yarra Valley on Friday 17th December in the United Petroleum BM58 over 1200 meters and now appears to be back on track. It was certainly a welcome pay day for the owners who had experienced great frustration with Scorpius, and his Yarra Valley win was his first since December 2019. Scorpius commenced his career impressively winning two of his first four starts including an impressive Metropolitan win at Sandown, however seemingly lost his way from that point and proved very frustrating for all concerned. A nice long slow pre training prep this time around by John, Chris and Brad Ledger who did a fantastic job with him was instrumental in turning this guy around and on top of three good barrier trials, Scorpius was primed to perform and perform he did. Ridden nice and quiet by Zac Spain who settled Scorpius towards the rear of the field off a good speed, Zac allowed Scorpius to travel on the bridle most of the way before being asked to set him alight just prior to the turn. Although carrying 63.5KG, Scorpius has an excellent turn of foot when the race is run to suit and being the widest runner in the straight, Scorpius let down with a terrific turn of foot to round in the leaders and won pulling up on the line by three quarters of a length defeating Gojazz with the race favourite Drone Strike filling third. Scorpius will derive a great deal of confidence out of that win and there does look to be a suitable BM64 at Caulfield on Wednesday January 12 which bears serious thought and the hope is that we may have found the trick to him and that he can now race consistently for the owners who have displayed great faith in sticking by him. Scorpius has now the race record of 20 starts for 3 wins, 4 seconds and a third for $131,025 in stakes and being nice and sound is well suited to Summer racing! |
